Professional Development Learning & Content Design Director This is a hybrid role which can be based in either the Schaumburg, IL or downtown Chicago office. Under the supervision of the Senior Director, Meetings and Professional Development, this role will lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of a strong curriculum of professional development content topics for members and their employers. This role is also responsible to identify, curate, and secure engaging, effective, and innovative learning and educational solutions for members of the SOA and their employers. Responsible for content selection for all professional development that will be offered using a variety of on-demand and digital delivery methods, with particular emphasis on a digital-first approach but also through in-person meetings and seminars. Will be responsible to develop and expand online learning center and build a structure including volunteers and staff resources in various departments within the organization to support this area. This will be a unique opportunity to create a curriculum-driven content function within a dynamic association. Will work closely with SOA member employers via our engagement programs to ensure their professional staff learning needs are met. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead and manage the intellectual capital development through partnership with key volunteers, Section Councils/Communities, actuarial subject matter experts and external organizations, f to identify learning outcomes, design, and maintain a professional development educational curriculum for members and their employers. This curriculum will drive choices of topics and delivery modes for the professional development offerings of the organization.
  • Design, recruit and build a structure utilizing volunteers as well as matrixed staff assigned to support this work from other departments (e.g., Research) as well as some of those within the Engagement Division.
  • Manage the selection and offering of externally sourced courses, badges, or certificates, as well as content selection for our events, webcasts, and seminars or other programs, and for the Online Learning Center.
  • Provide quality and professional relevance oversight of all professional development content.
  • Serve as staff partner for SOA professional development content and assist in the development of cutting-edge sessions/webcasts/podcasts, etc. (If an actuary is in the role.)
  • Be the spokesperson for the SOA's online learning center and collaborate with other SOA staff to begin to promote our programs and be responsible to increase the revenue from the learning center.
  • Working with other staff, will build relationships with SOA member employers focused on learning, understanding, and responding to their staff professional development needs. Will leverage the Professional Development Leadership Network (PDLN) group, Employers Council, and other relationships to understand and develop deep insights into employer professional development needs.
  • Responsible for planning the structure and makeup of content we offer in various webcast series and other programs to appeal to different employer types and member and non-member personas.
  • Create and negotiate partnerships with a variety of educational content providers to source and provide educational materials, programs, courses, and learning opportunities for members and their employers.
  • Coordinate with the PDC (Professional Development Committee), market research, and other sources of information to identify gaps in current SOA and market professional development offerings. Build and implement plans to provide content and educational experiences that close these gaps.
  • Work closely with the Employer Engagement staff to identify and understand employers' Professional Development needs and convert them to new program offerings.
  • Work closely with Product Development & Innovation and other key stakeholders to identify, develop, test, and implement new innovative learning & development experiences for members and their employers.
  • Recommend, design, and monitor measurements of the effectiveness of learning initiatives and their adoption and success with member and employer audiences. Evaluate and interpret the results of these measures and plan effective responses to them.
  • Proactively engage in external research, and knowledge sharing to stay current on on-demand, digital learning and development and learning curation trends and best practices. Involvement in relevant professional societies focused on professional learning and development issues and practices will be especially important.
  • Perform as a team member while executing duties. NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
    • Understand the policies and guidelines of the SOA and ensure volunteers and presenters have the information they need to understand and comply. This would apply to copyrights, reproductions, speakers' fees, and reimbursement.
    • Engage the appropriate members of the program team to resolve any issues on behalf of the volunteers. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED (an equivalent amount of training, education and experience will be considered)
      • Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Economics, Statistics or a business-related field or Bachelor's Degree in Instructional Design, Training & Development, Adult Learning, Project Management or equivalent practical experience. Advanced training or education (e.g., a Masters in Instructional Design or Adult Learning) would be a bonus.
      • An FSA or ASA credential would be helpful with a minimum of three years of experience in the actuarial profession, but not required. If an actuary, deeply knowledgeable and fluent in actuarial terminology and general business terminology.
      • Experience in planning Professional Development programs and knowledge of effective learning and development methods is a plus. Especially valuable will be direct experience in the development and implementation of technical professional development curricula and educational or development plans for adult learners. Prior experience with these topics in other professional society or university settings would be extremely helpful.
      • Strong familiarity and experience with the field of adult learning and development, including especially online and on-demand courses, educational providers, and the experience of using these services.
      • Experience working with subject matter experts, volunteers and program stakeholders to design curriculum and learning programs for a curriculum. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
        • Strong affinity and passion for and knowledge of technology and digital offerings of professional development and continuing education systems.
        • Able to prioritize in complex, fast-paced work environment.
        • Provide excellent service and teamwork with staff, members, and volunteers.
        • Demonstrated consistent delivery on commitments - great organizational skills with exceptional follow through and attention to detail.
        • Effective negotiating skills.
        • Strong verbal and written communication skills and collaboration skills. Possess collaboration skills to take ideas and input from multiple sources and synthesize them into effective learning solutions.
        • Work effectively independently and as a member of a team.
        • Ability to provide timely and accurate follow up on assignments.
        • Ability to recognize compelling content with high potential to engage learners
        • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and meet tight deadlines while maintaining high-quality work.
        • Innovative and proactive problem-solving skills with the ability to exercise integrity and sound judgment in complex situations.
