The Global Occupational Health and Hazardous Materials Leader
will provide subject matter expertise and program management for
the industrial hygiene, ergonomics, medical surveillance and
hazardous materials transportation strategy, performance and
compliance at Stepan Company. Upon request the Leader participates
in continual improvement and compliance efforts, risk reduction
initiatives and supports adherence to company standards, applicable
industry standards, and applicable regulations related to
industrial health and hazardous materials transportation for all
Stepan locations. This position reports directly to the Global
Director- Occupational Health, Safety and Security.
• Management Systems: Assists in
development, implementation and continuous improvement of
Occupational Health and Hazardous Material Transportation related
systems, policies, programs, standards, tools and templates.
• Worksite Chemical Exposure Protection &
Compliance: Delivers expert knowledge to minimize employee health
risks to chemical, physical and biological agents in the workplace.
Expertise includes development of engineering controls, personal
protective equipment, emergency response procedures to provide
employee protection, management of hazardous materials
transportation incidents, and regulatory compliance. Experienced in
the use of risk-based assessments, exposure monitoring schedules,
and global database tools (Intelex) to drive programs
• Occupational Health Program Management:
Expertise in managing external occupational health service
providers for support with company or regulatory required
pre-employment physical, respirator use, audiometric, ergonomic,
chemical specific, and COVID-19 programs. Additional expertise
needed in workplace injury and workers compensation case management
and return-to-work programs.
• Hazardous Materials Compliance & Emergency
Response: Delivers expert knowledge relative to hazardous materials
transportation via rail, truck, barge or pipelines and implements
regulatory required and American Chemical Council’s Responsible
Care compliance programs. Works with company logistics and supply
chain teams in the development of programs. Coordinates global
CHEMTREC programs and emergency response follow-up. Find,
develop and deliver safety and security training program content
and performance tracking using global on-line and customer
developed training methods.
• Upon request participate in due diligence for
acquisitions/divestitures and related Industrial Health and
Hazardous Materials transportation integration issues to minimize
and manage risk for the company.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in Health and
Safety regulated chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical,
biochemical or other process related industry.
• Experience with Health and Safety on national
or global level.
• Comfortable interacting and communicating at
the executive and board level as well as with senior government
• Professional certification or licensure
preferred (i.e. P.E., CSP, CIH, CHMM etc.)
• Ability to travel to manufacturing sites and
work in an industrial environment with associated hazards
• Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
• Advanced degree in science, engineering or
business administration preferred; Specialized training in Health
and Safety regulations and practices.
