Job Description The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national nonprofit association established in 1863 that represents more than 99,500 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia, and uniformed services, is seeking a Production Assistant to join our Publications team, located at our Headquarters office in Schaumburg, Illinois --- a northwest suburb of Chicago. The AVMA---s mission is to lead the profession by advocating for its members and advancing the science and practice of veterinary medicine to improve animal and human health. Under the direction of the Managing Editor, the Production Assistant will be responsible for the production workflow and quality assurance for all manuscripts submitted for publication in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA) and the American Journal of Veterinary Research (AJVR) , from acceptance through online posting and print publication. The position will work closely with the Managing Editor and other staff, to ensure that both journals are published according to journal style, standards, and deadlines; and will produce weekly reports for the Publications team, designed to provide manuscript inventory and publication metrics, including time to publication and acceptance rates. Additional qualifications include: Bachelor---s degree in English, Journalism, or a related field Minimum of 2 years of related experience in a publishing environment Demonstrated project management skills, including the ability to work in a deadline-oriented environment Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word is required Outstanding proofreading and editing skills for written material; knowledge of standard biomedical editing styles preferred Working knowledge of the ScholarOne Manuscript Central platform is preferred Highly organized and detailed-oriented Excellent written and oral communication skills Proven ability to work well within a team-oriented environment Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours, as needed The AVMA provides excellent employee benefits, including generous health insurance, retirement plans, paid time-off (e.g., vacation, sick, paid parental leave) and a supportive work/life balance.
